World Youth Day 2008 embracing telecommunications
In a World Youth Day first, Pope Benedict XVI will send daily text messages to the more than 500,000 young people attending the WYD08 festivities in Sydney in July. As the official telecommunications partner of the event, Telstra is making it possible for the Pope to reach youth for the first time in their social space.
Cardinal George Pell talks about how World Youth Day 2008 (www.wyd2008.org) and the Catholic Church are embracing new media and technology to reach today’s youth. Cardinal Pell discusses getting an ancient message out and how technology is helping translate and deliver information in the language of young people.
In particular the new WYD08 on-line social networking site XT3 (www.xt3.com), will connect attendees during the festivities throughout WYD08 and help them stay in touch when they return to their home countries.
